Citing Books:


1. A Book by a Single Author
  • Characteristics of Citation of Book by Single Author: 1st- Author's Name. 2nd- Title of the Book. 3rd- Publication Information.
*Ex. Smith, Daniel. Our Crazy World: Consequences of Global Warming. New York: Farrar, 2002.

*Author's Name- Reverse the author's name for alphabetizing with a comma after the last name.
- Never abbreviate, but omit titles/ affiliations/ and degrees that follow names.

*When writing titles, write out the full title of the book, including any subtitle, as given on the title page of the selected book.
- Write the subtitle after a colon unless the title ends in a question mark, exclamation mark, or a dash.
- Place a period after the title unless it is otherwise punctuated.

*Underline entire title except for the period at the end.
- You may italicize as long as you remain consistent with your choice.

*Publication information: include city of publication, publisher's name, and year of publication.
- This information is found directly in the book.
- Any information not given on the title page can usually be found on the copyright page.
- If several cities are listed, use the first one, and for cities outside of US, include abbreviation of country name.

2. A Book by Two or More Authors
  • To cite a book with multiple authors, give the names of the authors in the order on the title page.
*Ex. Eggins, Suzanne, and Diana Slade. Analyzing Casual Conversation. London: Cassell, 1997.
3. An Anthology
  • An anthology is a book that contains related works from many different authors.
*When citing an anthology that was edited by someone on the title page, write the name of the editor with a comma and the abbreviated form of editor, "ed."
-If a person serves as multiple functions such as being an editor and a translator, give both roles in their order of appearance.

*Ex.Lopate, Phillip, ed. The Art of the Personal Essay: An Anthology from the Classical Era to the Present. New York: Anchor-Doubleday, 1994.

4. Specific Work Within an Anthology
  • To cite a specific work in an anthology you need to add the following information: specific author's name, specific title of the work, and the page numbers containing the work.
*Ex. Allende, Isabel. "Toad's Mouth." The Art of the Personal Essay: An Anthology from the Classical Era to the Present. Ed. Phillip Lopate. New York: Anchor-Doubleday, 1994. 83-88.
